The Story Behind the Adirondack Chair

The outdoor lounge chair known as the Adirondack chair features wide armrests, a tall slatted back, and a seat that is higher in the front than the back. Its name is a nod to the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York.

Thomas Lee invented the chair between 1900 and 1903 in Westport, New York, but it was patented by his friend Harry C. Bunnell, who made some minor adaptations to make it more suitable for convalescents. The chairs gained popularity in nearby tuberculosis sanatoriums, where the armrests were appreciated for their ability to help open up the sitter's chest. Today, Adirondack chairs are often made by injection molding and can take on various forms, and they have even been marketed as "Muskoka chairs" in Ontario, Canada, despite not originating in Muskoka.

Why are Adirondack Chairs so Popular?

There are numerous reasons why adding Adirondack chairs to your outdoor living space is a fantastic idea. One of the top reasons is the comfort they provide. With their wide design and sturdy armrests, Adirondack chairs offer exceptional comfort for people of all ages and body types. Whether it's a child enjoying a treat by the lake or a tired parent unwinding after a long day, these chairs are a game-changer when it comes to outdoor relaxation.
